The Iraq war began in 2003 with a US led invasion composed mostly of US and UK troops. The pretext was to destroy Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction and Iraq’s links with al-Qaeda.
The war is still on-going after five years. No WMDs or Iraqi links with al-Qaeda have ever been found.
Rowland’s position was of total opposition to the war. As usual he tried to do something about it by organising committees, marches and rallies in support of all the ‘Troops Home’ and ‘End the War’ movements.
The first photo is of a 2003 Peace Campaign in the Thistle Centre of Stirling. The second is of an attempt to hang a huge anti-war flag from the top of the Wallace Memorial. Bad luck stopped Rowland from accomplishing this rather daring feat as high winds prevented the banner from unfurling properly.
The first slide show is of an ant-war demonstration, again in the Thistle Centre and the second is of an anti-war march in Glasgow.
